Airport development: Is it simply personal?

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has described the NCA's latest airport planning decision [to allow for major retail businesses at the airport, as per The Canberra Times today] as evidence that the NCA and its staff appear to put their status as an independent national agency ahead of Canberra's sustainable development.

"I find it extraordinary that the National Capital Authority didn't talk the matter through with the ACT Planning and Land Authority before giving its approval" Dr Foskey said today.

"This complete lack of collaboration and communication in an area where responsibilities and interests clearly overlap is ridiculous and damaging. I can only assume it reflects some petty personal vendetta against the ACT planning regime, as it otherwise makes obvious sense for the NCA to work with ACTPLA on matters as relevant as this."

"We are talking here about a mob of "planning professionals" who live in the same town, use the same supermarkets, send their kids to the same schools. But when it comes to matters like this, they just don't work with each other."

"I think we've always known that the airport is out for itself - and doing very well. However, while the NCA plays the Federal Government's political game against the ACT, and the ACT Government falls in with this, the ACT community and our path to sustainable development misses out" Dr Foskey said.
