ADI Should Not Be Developed During Water Crisis

While Frank Sartor met with mayors from across Sydney today to discuss
the water crisis, the Greens have called for a moratorium on major
developments in Western Sydney.

"Sydney does not currently have enough water to support massive new
housing developments on the former ADI site and at Bringelly," Greens MP
and planning spokesperson Sylvia Hale said today.

"5000 houses on the ADI site would use nearly as much water per year as
the 1485ML average daily consumption for the entire city.

"In 2003 Sydney households each used an average of 249 kilolitres of
water per year. At current water usage rates, developing the ADI site
would suck a massive 1245 megalitres of water per year out of our
already depleted catchments.

"With Sydney's dams below 50 percent capacity and weeds choking the
Hawkesbury, we cannot afford to continue building thousands of new water
guzzling houses in Western Sydney.

"Before any new major developments are approved, Sydney must radically
reduce water usage.

If Frank Sartor and Bob Carr are serious about solving Sydney's water
crisis they should rezone the ADI site so that it cannot be developed,"
Ms Hale said.
