MEDIA RELEASE

Hicks August trial will be a political travesty
Greens Senator Bob Brown says John Howard should get up the courage to
tell President Bush to treat Australians the same as Americans
The US Military Commission trial of David Hicks, which Prime Minister
Howard now says will be in August, will be a travesty, Greens Senator
Bob Brown, who has just returned from Washington, said today.
"The Prime Minister is mixing politics and justice in a rotten cocktail:
David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib will be denied Australian justice or even
the justice of a US domestic court or military tribunal," Senator Brown
said.
"Cautioning the Australian public not to get 'starry eyed' about
Australians being denied the same justice US inmates of Guantanamo Bay
received, is Mr Howard getting blurry eyed about keeping politics out of
justice," Senator Brown said.
The US military commission is a kangaroo court for those who President
Bush considers second-rated foreigners like the two Australians.
Selling Australian justice out here will rebound on John Howard, Senator
Brown said.
