Labor's airport plan bad news for inner-Sydney residents
Media Release 28 May 2004
Greens NSW Senate candidate Dr John Kaye described Labor's plan for a
second airport at a site in the Southern Highlands as a recipe for more
noise in the inner suburbs of Sydney.
Dr Kaye said: "If Mark Latham really wanted to help households whose lives
are being destroyed by Sydney Airport, he would announce plans for a
replacement airport outside the Sydney basin, not just a second airport.
"All that a second airport would do is take smaller aircraft and
intra-state flights.
"Labor's second airport would be as bad as their third runway. It would
increase the capacity of Sydney Airport to take more of the big jets and
increase noise impacts on households that are already suffering.
"Labor has now admitted that their second airport would only be an
overflow, taking budget airlines. The residents of the inner city need to
take careful note of the impact this will have on their health, safety and
peace and quiet.
"A second airport will not only make matters much worse for inner-city
residents. It will also relegate the residents of rural NSW who depend on
air travel to an airport that has no connection to interstate and
international planes.
"The people of Sydney and rural and remote Australians will not be fooled
again by Labor. Having built the third runway based on promises that were
never fulfilled, no one trusts Labor on airport issues," Dr Kaye said.
