PM is one timid step forward, ten steps back on Gay and Lesbian rights

"The PM's reported decision to allow Gays and Lesbians to nominate their
partner as a superannuation beneficiary whilst prohibiting them from
adopting children or marrying can only be described as a belated and
confused policy from a confused man whose time has come" Cunningham MP
Michael Organ said today.

"The PM's logic here is that same sex couples can live together but only
if they don't live to the full extent of their lives."

"Indeed the implication from Howard's proposals are that he would prefer
if Gays and Lesbians kept quiet. That is why Howard opposes same sex
couples adopting children and marrying."

"Nonetheless, credit must be paid where credit is due. Howard's proposal
to change the superannuation entitlement regime is a step forward- If
only the PM would support the rest of my Same Sex Relationships
(Ensuring Equality) Bill, that I introduced on Monday this Parliament
could no longer spend its time discriminating against people because of
their sexuality."

"The PM needs to get out more." Michael Organ said.
