GREENS CALL FOR ACTION ON GREENHOUSE OUTSIDE DISASTER MOVIE
Queensland Greens members dressed in raincoats will be handing out leaflets to movie goers attending today's premiere of The Day after Tomorrow.
The action will take place from 12 noon to 12.30 today (Thursday) outside the Regent theatre in the Queen Street Mall. Greens Senate candidate Drew Hutton will be able to speak to the media at 12.15.
Mr Hutton said that, while he emphasized the Greens did not necessarily agree with the exact nature of the scenarios depicted by the film, they did believe greenhouse gas-induced climate change represented the single biggest threat to the planet.
He said PM John Howard had failed to show leadership on this issue by refusing to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.
"John Howard is, once again, simply following the poor example of George Bush by not signing the Kyoto Protocol and consequently, Australia will miss out on the many economic benefits that will come from global carbon trading,' Mr Hutton said.
"The Federal Government should also override the Queensland Government and include the Sustainable Housing Code, rejected by Mr Beattie, in the national building code so that Queensland homes can be more energy efficient.
"The building of one more massive coal-fired power station at Kogan Creek shows Mr Beattie is not serious about curbing greenhouse emissions.
"He thinks he has done his bit by reducing land clearing in the state."
