Website bungle reveals Minister's sinister amalgamation program

A website bungle has again proven that Local Government Minister Tony Kelly intends to push ahead with his program of forced amalgamations, Greens MP and Local Government Spokesperson Sylvia Hale said today.

"Last Wednesday, people travelled 9 hours by bus to give 5 minute verbal submissions to the commissioners, arguing that Merriwa Shire not be destroyed.

"Yet at 4pm yesterday, a proclamation for a new Mid-Western super council appeared on the Department of Local Government's website. By 10pm it had disappeared, and is yet to return.

"The proclamation was even dated today, even though it was accidentally posted yesterday.

"Clearly the report was written before those public submissions were heard because by Friday, the report was in the Minister's hand.

"This website bungle has exposed the Minister's determination to ignore the interests of the community and crush local councils.

"It's no wonder that councils and ratepayers around country NSW are up in arms.

"The Greens call on the Minister to give councils a fair go. We have just had elections. The Minister should give new councillors a chance to prove themselves," Ms Hale said.
