RELEASE RED CROSS REPORT - OR RESIGN
Cunningham MP Michael Organ has demanded that Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer release the full Red Cross report which details the inhumane
conditions at Guantanamo Bay, including interrogation techniques that
would be illegal under American law, or resign for failing to guard the
welfare of Australian citizens.
"Minister Downer told parliament yesterday that the government has taken
all possible steps to ensure the welfare of David Hicks and Mamdouh
Habib, but how can that be when the techniques used at Abu Ghraib in
Iraq are those which were developed at Guantanamo Bay?" Mr Organ asked.
"US Ambassador Tom Schieffer's performance is no better. He wrote to me
on 1 July 2003, claiming that and the US Government had treated Mr.
Hicks and Mr. Habib with 'respect and humanity'."
"The veracity of these claims is under dispute from the Red Cross, Human
Rights Watch, independent witnesses, and the British citizens released
from Guantanamo Bay. The continued disgrace of video and photographic
evidence streaming out of Abu Ghraib prison adds considerable weight to
fears of abuse including torture in Guantanamo Bay."
"Alexander Downer is failing in his duty as a Minister of the
Commonwealth; he could and must do more to safeguard the welfare of
Australian citizens."
"The Government is content for two Australians to be deemed terrorists,
and left to rot. It's not good enough. Downer would be well advised to
reconsider his future." Michael Organ said.
