PM must speak out against tax dodges by private schools
Greens NSW lead Senate candidate Dr John Kaye has called on the Prime
Minister to act on the report released today by The Australia Institute
that lists examples of private schools encouraging parents to make tax
deductible donations to which they're not entitled.
"Prime Minister Howard has questioned the value system of our public
schools, yet today we have an example of private schools encouraging
parents to cheat on their tax and our Prime Minister remains silent," said
Dr Kaye.
"Mr Howard must come out and condemn this practice by some private schools
that amounts to nothing more than rorting the system.
"The Australia Institute has exposed a major problem in this report which
is just the tip of the iceberg. And there are even more rorts like these
going on in the private school system.
"Building funds are inherently unfair as they work to make wealthy schools
even wealthier, while pumping even more public money into private schools
while public schools miss out.
"The public already pays substantial amounts to building funds through both
Commonwealth and State capital works funding.
"The Greens call on the Government to review the tax deductibility status
for contributions to these types of funds," said Dr Kaye.
