Government's greenhouse
policy incoherence exposed

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today joined Shadow Environment Minister,
Kelvin Thompson, to launch two reports compiled by AIDWATCH that expose
the government's active support for 'greenhouse' industry in the
developing world.

In the wake of Russia's decision to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, the
findings of these reports further underling the Government's untenable
position on global greenhouse gas abatement.

"The Government's credibility on climate change is in taters. Not only
is the Prime Minister still opposing Kyoto but, as these reports show,
is undermining the development of renewable industries in developing
countries in our region," Senator Nettle said.

"The Prime Minister's argument against Kyoto ratification has been that
it does not include developing countries. These reports show that his
government is in fact locking developing countries in to fossil fuel
industries."

"The Greens support the call from Friends of the Earth for an end to the
use of our Export Credit Agencies to fund fossil fuel projects.

"In the last budget seventeen million dollars in subsidies was given to
oil companies for exploration whilst a paltry $1.5million went on a
'green vehicle guide.".

"We should be showing leadership in our region by going beyond
ratification of Kyoto and committing to reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

Greens measures to reduce emissions would include:
	*	Ensuring that buildings and appliances become rapidly
more energy efficient by introducing mandatory standards and labelling
	*	Establishing a 'Sun Fund' to help farmers and others in
rural and regional Australia take up energy conservation and renewable
energy
	*	Phasing out coal-fired electricity in Australia by 2050,
as part of the switch to renewable energy
	*	Introducing a carbon levy to finance investment in
energy conservation, public transport and renewable energy
