MEDIA RELEASE
Friday, 21 May 2004
Marine fog
The oceans management plan released today by federal Environment
Minister David Kemp is largely fog, Greens Senator Bob Brown said.
"Where is the 15% of oceans off Australia that should be protected to
meet environmental goals?" Senator Brown asked.
"Last week the Costello budget papers announced a huge new oil
exploration zone in the seas off Tasmania's World Heritage west coast.
This poses a major threat of future oil spills and pollution.
"This government allows seismic testing (multiple explosions) and
clearfell logging with huge soil erosion run-off into the seas.
"The Minister's plan is well short of world's best practice and is far
behind New Zealand in terms of marine protected zones," Senator Brown
said.
