Green students oppose tax cuts on
Public Education Day
20.05.04
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today congratulated Greens Students for
their nation wide action as part of Public Education Day to raise the
call for investment in public eduction not tax cuts.
"Students are right to be angry at the government's budget priorities.
The Treasurer would rather give tax breaks to top earners than invest in
public education.
"The cost of abolishing HECS fees altogether is less than $2 billion a
year, that's the same amount that the Treasurer spent on tax cuts for
top earners in the budget.
"Fees are rising around the country and students and their families are
feeling the pain whilst there is still over four billion dollars unspent
in the government coffers.
"The government has misread the mood of Australians if they think that
neglecting public services in favour of tax cuts will deliver them an
election win.
"With policies of tax cuts for the rich and rising university fees this
government has shown itself as deeply elitist government and out of
touch with the electorate.
"The Howard government is playing games with our future when they fail
to make the necessary investment in public education.
"The Greens will continue to keep the pressure on both Labor and Liberal
parties during the election campaign to make public education a
priority.
