INDUSTRIAL MANSLAUGHTER - A STATE AND NATIONAL DISGRACE
The continued failure by the NSW and Federal governments to enact tough
legislation on industrial manslaughter is a ringing indictment of
legislative spinelessness, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said this
afternoon.
"Both the State and Federal governments continue to refuse to legislate
stringent penalties for companies and company directors whose negligence
results in serious injury or death to workers despite National
Occupational Health and Safety Commission chair Jerry Ellis' assessment
that more than 2,000 Australians are likely to die from workplace
accidents and disease this year", Mr. Organ said today.
"Worker deaths exceed the national road toll and the community is
demanding that workplace health and safety becomes a priority".
"When the NOHSC head says that the current level of death and injury
would not be tolerated in any other field, governments must listen to
his advice."
"I am pleased that a photo exhibition, put together in support of my
Private Member's Bill to provide stringent penalties for companies and
company directors whose negligence results in serious injury or death to
workers, has now opened in State parliament, but NSW and Federal
government inaction remains a shameful indictment on our society", Mr.
Organ said.
