Pell on wrong track

Media Release 18 May 04

Greens NSW Senate candidate Dr John Kaye today condemned Cardinal George
Pell's support of discriminatory behaviour in Catholic schools.

Dr Kaye said: "Cardinal Pell is stepping outside of the bounds of
acceptable 21st century behaviour.

"He demands the right for his schools to discriminate against students and
teachers on the grounds of their sexuality.

"This sort of prejudice violates the commonly held beliefs of a liberal
democratic society and is opposed by the overwhelming majority of Australians.

"Cardinal Pell wants his schools to behave in a way that is offensive to
community standards.

"He wants to inflict massive suffering on gay and lesbian students and
teachers in Catholic schools.

"Cardinal Pell is condemning gays and lesbians to live a lie and to hide
their true identity if they want to continue in a Catholic school. Young
people coming to terms with their sexuality need support and encouragement,
not prejudice and discrimination.

"This is a very poor message to be sending to all students, regardless of
their sexuality.

"Cardinal Pell should forget his personal prejudices and allow Catholic
education to accept the mainstream values of 90% of Australians," Dr Kaye said.
