Greens slam Howard plan to keep Australians in Iraq
The prospect of more Australians being sent to Iraq would meet
widespread opposition in Australia, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.
Today's Sydney Morning Herald report by Tom Allard says the Prime
Minister is likely to boost troop numbers to 1,000. However, Mr Howard
today said there will not be an increased commitment.
"The Australians should be coming home from, not going to, this
imbroglio. Our civil aid should increase and an UN-backed interim force
best made up from Arabic countries should be encouraged," Senator Brown
said.
"The Prime Minister keeps wading deeper into George W Bush's mire but it
is not Australia's war.
"He argued that our troops should be sent to defeat Saddam Hussein's
terrorism but with Saddam Hussein behind bars, he is claiming that more
Australians should be sent to defeat terrorism. He has lost
credibility," Senator Brown said.
