Greens industrial manslaughter campaign  wins support of NSW Parliament 


Cunningham MP Michael Organ has called upon the NSW government to fully
comply with the findings of the NSW Parliamentary committee that
recommended today; 'as a matter of urgency, discreet and specific
offences of corporate manslaughter be created in the NSW Crimes Act'.

The findings of the committee add considerable weight to demands for
industrial manslaughter laws- A campaign that my office has been running
with NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon since last year, because effective
Industrial Manslaughter laws will save lives. 

Only two weeks ago I launched an industrial manslaughter photographic
exhibition in Wollongong that showed harrowing and dangerous workplaces
and the deaths and injury that result from them.  At that launch I spoke
of the clear cut need for appropriate criminal sanctions against bosses
where their criminal negligence kills and injures workers. 

The Premier has an opportunity to save lives that is endorsed by his own
Parliament. I hope Premier Carr accepts our invitation to come to the
exhibition that will be in his Parliament on Wednesday 19 May at 1:30pm.
As a bare minimum, the Premier should see first hand the effect of
unsafe workplaces." Michael Organ said.
