***** MEDIA RELEASE *****
17 May 2004

Government must compensate Nauru refugees.

The Prime Minister must authorise generous compensation payments to the
92 Afghans found to be refugees by the Federal government after more
than two and a half years in detention on Nauru island, because its the
right thing to do, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

"By placing whole families in detention for years, this government has
gone out of its way to ruin lives. The least the government could do is
compensate them for their suffering. After all, Canberra has found
millions to spend on the war in Iraq, so it's not like they can't afford
it.

"The government's policy of sending soldiers to fight in Afghanistan and
Iraq and then locking up Afghan and Iraqi asylum seekers for years
remains a glowing and unforgivable hypocrisy. Michael Organ said.

"The Pacific solution is a failure, Australia's detention centres must
be closed down, and asylum seekers must be allowed to live in the
community. Michael Organ said.
