Labor should reconsider backing Howard's tax cuts


Labor should reconsider its support for the government's $14.7 billion
(over four years) tax cuts, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"Today's opinion poll (Age, Sun-Herald) showing that 65% of people,
post-budget, still prefer better funding of health and education to tax
cuts," Senator Brown said.

"Both the government and Labor should review the Costello vote-buying
cuts in light of the determined public wisdom. 

"The Greens will oppose the cuts and would divert the money to ensuring
free tertiary education for all Australians, assured dental and medical
services, housing and public transport.

"It would also allow much-needed funds to repair the Murray Darling and
save Tasmania's forests," Senator Brown said.
