MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday, 12 May 2004
Saddam protected while 20,000 Iraqi prisoners open to abuse
The Minister for Defence today ducked a question from Greens Senator Bob
Brown on double standards in Iraq which leave 20,000 Iraqi prisoners
vulnerable to abuse while Saddam Hussein is protected by the Geneva
Conventions.
Senator Hill, in a long answer in the Senate, agreed Saddam Hussein is
protected. Civilian prisoners held in Saddam's former jails do not
benefit from the Geneva rules.
"The Howard government, post-war, justifies the war on the basis of the
removal of this tyrant," Senator Brown said.
"But it has done nothing to guarantee Iraqi civilians now in jail, many
of whom opposed Saddam, the same contact with relatives and protection
from cruel or humiliating treatment that he gets. There are estimates
that up to 90% of these prisoners are innocent of any crime," Senator
Brown said.
