Kofi Annan's words are a challenge to Howard - Brown
Kofi Annan's reference to oil and gas revenues as an 'essential
contribution' to East Timor's future warrant a response from Prime
Minister John Howard, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.
"The UN secretary-general's thinly veiled criticism of Australia's
unilateral acquisition of revenues from the oil and gas fields in the
Timor Sea is a pointer to growing global criticism of Australia's
actions against its poor neighbour," Senator Brown said.
"This issue has 30 years to run. East Timor is refusing to ratify the
Greater Sunrise agreement for development of the biggest field.
"Mr Howard should meet Prime Minister Alkatiri to resolve the issue
before greater damage is done to Australia's relationship with East
Timor and its global reputation."
