MEDA RELEASE
Sunday, 2 May 2004
Downer failing Australia on torture
in Iraq
Downer in response to Laurie Oakes: "There is no need for us to do
anything about it."
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer is wrong to ignore the humiliation and
torture of Iraqi prisoners under US and British detention, Greens
Senator Bob Brown said today.
"The outrage is sending shock waves through the Islamic world and it is
a miscalculation by Downer that this will not increase insecurity for
Australians in Iraq and elsewhere.
"Both President Bush and Prime Minister Blair have gone public with
their condemnation of the captors' actions.
"It is essential for Prime Minister Howard to condemn the torture and
make it clear he has contacted President Bush and Prime Minister Blair
to express that condemnation.
"Mr Downer is making a serious error of judgement by dismissing this
vile behaviour with a shrug of his shoulders. Australians will expect
action," said Senator Brown.
