Labor chokes on same sex equality Bill


Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today criticised the Carr Labor government for failing to bring on the Miscellaneous Acts (Relationships) Bill 2002 before the end of the Budget Session of Parliament.

The Bill will now have to wait until August 27th at the earliest to be debated in the Upper House.  The Bill will amend 25 different pieces of legislation to provide equality for same sex relationships.

Ms Rhiannon said today:

"The Greens are very disappointed that the government has stalled the Bill in the Upper House.

"In the four straight weeks of sitting that finished last night the government couldn't find room for this important Bill.

"The Greens are concerned that the government may have buckled to pressure from the Rev. Fred Nile.

"The Greens will pressure Labor to ensure that the Bill does actually make it through Parliament."
