GREENHOUSE SHOCKER
Howard should phone Bush
President Bush's decision to abandon the Kyoto Protocol will send shock
waves around the world, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.
"Prime Minister Howard should call President Bush and ask him to reverse the
decision. Climate change threatens Australia's economy, its future
lifestyle and security and could completely remove some Pacific and Indian
Ocean Island neighbours from existence", Senator Brown said.
The Bush Administration has caved in to the greed of the corporate lobby.
"It is a low point in world environmental history," he said.
Senator Brown said claims by Environment Minister Robert Hill that Australia
will achieve its Kyoto emissions target by 2010 are misleading.
By 1998 Australia was producing 16.9 percent more greenhouse gasses that the
Kyoto target for 2010 and Mr Hill's own Australian Greenhouse Office says
that the growth in total emissions will be 18% over target by 2010 and,
without abatement measures, could be 43% over (p108-9 Senate Environment
Committee, 2000).
Senator Brown gave notice of the following motion in the Senate this
morning.
That the Senate:
(a) Notes the comments of US EPA chief that the "we have no
interest in implementing that [Kyoto Protocol] treaty"
(b) Notes the Australian Foreign Minister Downer's endorsement
of the US policy on greenhouse
(c) Condemns the US Bush administration and the Howard
Government for their efforts to derail the Kyoto Climate Change Convention
