Anti-Teoh Bill Must be Defeated
Greens Senator Bob Brown has urged the defeat of the Government's
controversial anti-Teoh legislation to be debated in the Senate today.
"The legislation, first introduced by the ALP over 6 years ago has long been
the bete noir of the Greens", Senator Brown said.
"The Administrative Decisions (Effect of International Instruments) Bill
1999 attacks international human rights and environmental law.
"The bill seeks to remove the need for Australian officials to consider our
international obligations when making decisions.
"It is in stark contrast to the Howard Government's total commitment to the
World Trade Organisation.
"The Bill will further undermine Australia's growing reputation as in
international human rights and environmental law pariah.
"The United Nations Human Rights Committee as well as several human rights
and environmental groups has urged the scrapping of the bill," Senator Brown
said.
