Brown Bid to Save Tas Tax Millions
Greens Senator Bob Brown is to try again to amend to taxation law to save
Tasmania landowners being hit with capital gains tax if they get a
government grant to save woodlands on their properties.
"In December the Tasmanian Labor Senators joined the government to vote down
my amendment. However, I think they have now got the message. My amendment
is fair. Other government grants don't attract a capital gains tax", Senator
Brown said.
"An obscure, unused subclause in the Tax Act is being used to funnel back to
the Tax Office millions of dollars, from the $60 million allocation for this
purpose under Mr Howard's Regional Forest Agreement with the Bacon
Government.
"The Bacon Government's advise to the Labor Senators to block the amendment
in December was baffling. But I think they have realised their mistake and
will now do the right thing," Senator Brown said.
He will move the amendments to the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill (No.5) 1999
in the Senate today or tomorrow.
