Tasmania GE Crops: Corporations Paid Beekeepers to Spread Genes in Crops

Brown Condemns Wooldridge

As Tasmania's genetically engineered crops crisis deepens, the Federal
government has been caught unaware that beekeepers were paid thousands of
dollars by the GE corporations to pollinate the GE crops knowing bees would
carry genetic material up to 8 kms into other croplands and the environment.

In the Senate Greens Senator Bob Brown said this made a farce of the Interim
Office of the Gene Technology Regulator's assurance that a 100 meter buffer
zone was sufficient to quarantine the GE crops.

Senator Brown called on the Minister for Health Michael Wooldridge to go to
Tasmania, to set up an independent inquiry and to look at the feasibility of
criminal charges.

"Dr Wooldridge has let the crisis get completely out of hand. I will give
notice of a motion for a Senate 'return to order' demanding the Minister
supply information on the crisis by 9.45 am on Thursday," Senator Brown
said.
