Greens Welcome Union's Courageous Ban on M5East Stack



The Greens have applauded the courageous decision by the Construction, Foresty, Mining and Energy Union to place a Green Ban on the M5East exhaust stack at Turrella. 
"The CFMEU has taken a commendable position in support of community health" says The Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon.
"The interim ban will give great encouragement to a community which has been waging a long and harrowing campaign for a reasonable filtration system on the stack.
"Without filtration, the chimney will pump dangerous exhaust fumes and heavy particles into the lungs of surrounding residents. 
"The ban is in line with a cross-party Standing Committee of the Legislative Council, which recommended in December 1999 that proper filtration should be installed on the stack.
"The CFMEU's action gives Minister Scully a chance to sit down with the union and affected residents and work out a satisfactory solution - one which doesn't compromise public health."
