Ruddock's Callousness at 160 Deaths Condemned by Senator Brown

Comments by Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock on the deaths of 160 men
women and children in the Timor Sea are "shockingly callous", Greens Senator
Bob Brown said today.

"Mr Ruddock's grim-faced indifference, in his 'if people are intent on
getting into vulnerable vessels...' comment, made my blood run cold,"
Senator Brown said.

"The ministers' sentiment, devoid of a hint of recognition of the utter
misery of the people caught in the cyclone, reflects badly on the Howard
Government.  It says 'they died having themselves to blame for who they
are'.

Senator Brown called on the Prime Minister to rebuke Mr Ruddock.  "Three
months after the 'Friendly Games' the Minister has made Australia seem blind
to utter tragedy.  

"Imagine the reaction had the 160 lost souls been Australians going from
Darwin to East Timor instead of non-Australians headed in the opposite
direction," Senator Brown said.
