Canberra stuck with ban on how to vote cards

The ACT Legislative Assembly yesterday rejected a Bill from the ACT Greens
to allow how-to-vote cards to be displayed inside polling places.

"The Greens' Bill was consistent with a recommendation of the Pettit review
into Governance in the ACT. It would have allowed for independent candidates
and political parties to have their how-to-vote cards available for voters
to refer to when inside in the polling places. Unfortunately, no other
Member of the Assembly would support me in this initiative" Ms Tucker said
today.

The distribution of electoral material immediately outside polling booths is
banned at Act Elections. 

"This has created problems for candidates who find it necessary to letterbox
every household or run a massive campaign of handing out how to vote cards
100 metres from every booth. This is an ineffective and wasteful use of
human and paper resources, and is biased in favour of large organisations."

"Both the old parties, Labor and Liberal, had previously indicated support
for the provision of how to vote card within polling places, but have since
changed their position" Ms Tucker said.
