Greens National Council in Canberra
"The Greens National Council meeting in Canberra this weekend has put the
party on full readiness for a federal election," Greens Convenor Cath Moore
said.
The meeting:
* Called on National, Liberal and Labor parties to reverse Friday's
Senate decision to prevent local government from declaring themselves as
GE-free zones, when debate resumes in the Senate tomorrow.
* Called on the Federal Government and Labor Opposition to change
policy and endorse self-determination for the peoples of West Papua and
Aceh.
* Congratulates the Greens environment ministers Dominique Voynet
(France) and Jürgen Trittin (Germany) for blocking USA and Australian moves
to undermine a world agreement on global warming.
* Reiterated a demand to stop the Jabiluka uranium mine.
* Opposed the new nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights in Sydney.
* Called on the Tasmanian and Federal Governments to end woodchipping
of Tasmania's Styx River Valley and declare it the 'Valley of the Giants
National Park', to be nominated for inclusion in the Tasmanian Wilderness
World Heritage Area.
"The Greens are building up with strong opinion poll backing and
environment, education and social justice issues certain to have a high
profile at the federal election. We expect to win 2 to 4 new Senate seats,"
Greens Senator Bob Brown said.
