Sydney Key to New Zealand Election - Brown

Greens Senator Bob Brown says the estimated 95 000 New Zealanders living in
New South Wales are the key to next Saturday's New Zealand general election.

"With polls showing a knife edge result and the Greens surging, the Kiwis in
Australia are a decisive block of votes," said Senator Brown.

"Last election, with some 95 000 Kiwis living in NSW, less than 4000 voted.

"A big percentage of these have a Green profile: young, mobile and
environmentally aware. Issues such as genetically modified organisms,
global warming and logging of forests in the South Island will be high on
their agenda.

"The Greens surge, with the Greens rating as high as 7% of the vote in the
latest polls, has pollsters in Wellington tipping the Greens to determine
who gets Government and take cabinet posts.

"We are calling on the Kiwis in Sydney - the biggest number of voters
outside New Zealand's major cities - to vote this time. Their vote is
critical. They are powerful. They should get to the Sydney polling booth,
the new Zealand Consulate, level 10, 55 Hunter Street, before Friday at
4pm", said Senator Brown.

The Greens have been distributing 'how to vote' material in Bondi, sometimes
described as 'little New Zealand'.
