The Greens MLCs Ian Cohen and Lee Rhiannon are today claiming victory over the withdrawal of a State Government amendment to introduce a $300 fine for bill posters. The proposed amendment was part of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment Bill 1999, currently being debated in the Lower House.

"We're pleased that Minister Refshauge has listened and responded to the concerns of the community.

"The amendment would have had a terrible impact on community groups and cultural industries. It would also have disadvantaged the people who rely on poll postering to communicate ideas and politics." said Mr Cohen.

The Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon, who had immediately sent out an action alert last week on hearing of the amendment, congratulated members of the Australian music industry on speaking out strongly against the proposal.

"The Greens initiated a strong campaign in the community and were delighted to work with the music industry in achieving such a good response.

"We're now looking forward to a consulation process with Urban Affairs and Planning Minister Andrew Refshauge to ensure a responsible and equitable approach to the use of poll posters." said Ms Rhiannon.
